Association for cultural advancement through visual art Acava hypatrax

This project benefits 16-to-19-year-olds not in employment education or training, especially those identified as hard to reach and requiring particular support and encouragement. A particular priority of this project is to engage with participants from migrant, black and other minority ethnic groups.

HypaTraX targets communities and neighbourhoods where there are high levels of disadvantage.

The project delivers three sixteen-week programmes over a ten-month period, providing learning opportunities for over 18 beneficiaries. Contributors to the project provide groups talks, advice and mentoring including: Karl Badger (Head of Music, Diabolical and Liberties), Paul McKee (Independent Music Video Commissioner), Eugene Manzi (Manzi, Press, PR & Management), Sean Rowley (radio DJ and television presenter), Pedro Romhanyi (Music Video Director, Oil Factory Films), Aki Nawaz (recording artist, Proprietor Nation Records and U-Cef (recording artist, Halal-Joint Productions).

The following organisations will also be offering beneficiaries up to four weeks of work-placement Nation Records, Diabolical Liberties, Oil Factory Films, BMG Records, Wall of Sound, Rose Hackney Barber plus Beggars Banquet, Workhard PR, Bad Moon Promotions and Intimate Studios - this will help the individuals to gain practical insights into the way the creative industries work, be able to shadow professionals, broaden their understanding of opportunities and progression routes and benefit from interesting and valuable work tasters.

Students will also visit media and music businesses where they take part in talks from industry professionals and attend presentations by film and music video makers.

Outreach is being offered in hard to reach areas offering taster sessions and workshops involving artists such as U-Cef and DJ D. ACAVA also has a Cybervan, a mobile facility equipped with computers and digital production and projection facilities.

This project is the fast route into the music industry. Students can work in a state-of-the-art professional studio and are able to record their own music tracks, shoot music videos, design CD's, build Internet sites, and lay out flyers all in an intensive sixteen week course!

The Project Beneficiaries

Q. What has hypaTraX shown you?

A. "I would like to be famous still, but it's shown me I can make an impact on the world and the way people see things. Not necessarily through music, but from everything I do. That's why now I try and respect everyone and like to keep it sweet, and the same energy that I put into being nice, is the same energy I could be putting into being disrespectful and real ill mannered."

Q. What's hypaTraX changed for you?

A. "The tutors have shown me what's going on in the music biz. I never thought of managing anyone or that aspect of the business. So that's opened another door for me."

Q. What is your biggest achievement since joining?

A. "Got the chance to make 2 tracks and perform them at venues. Made my first electronic press kit and a whole load of other stuff".
