HRH the Prince of Wales has officially opened a new eco-centre at Roots and Shoots, the Lambeth environmental and educational charity, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
During the visit the Prince met trainees on a Roots and Shoots ESF project which is improving the employability of disadvantaged young people with learning, health or social problems. The charity takes a holistic approach to their training, teaching them key skills alongside general life skills and horticulture and retail qualifications. In Roots and Shoots’ supportive environment, the young people acquire social skills and confidence, as well as purpose and direction to equip them for work and life.
During the year, work placements give them the chance to experience a working environment in some of London’s best-known gardens, including Buckingham Palace, the Grosvenor Estate and the Chelsea Physic Garden. The project is co-financed by the Learning and Skills Council.
